Energy saving in buildings has become a question of crucial importance in many countries. At the same time, the requirements for satisfactory indoor climate with a low electricity consumption have increased which prompt the supply and demand for energy efficient homes.

The battle against GLOBAL WARMING shall start from home insulation to reduce green house gas emission. In developed countries, government has even allowed tax credit to house owners for costs incurred in carrying out home insulation works which meets the urgent need in the fight against GLOBAL WARMING.

The common answer from the public in general to make a house or office cool is probably by switching ON THE AIR CONDITIONERS. Almost every house owner living in tropical climate rely on air conditioners to cool their homes during a hot day and practically every office switch on the air conditioners once the office is in use.

Alternatively you can achieve your dream cool and comfort living / working environment despite in a very hot sunny day with the help of PC INSUL and reduce your dependence on air conditioners to cool your home / office.

Thermal Insulation In General

The impact that roofs have on energy is often overlooked, the impact of which can be significant. In Malaysia, the roof of most houses are constructed using timber roof trusses and concrete roof tiles. The heat gained through the roof which convect through the ceiling has increased the indoor heat to a level that most house owners will not feel comfortable without the use of air conditioners.

However, the usage of air conditioners is not the answer to get rid of the stifling indoor heat unless the whole house is equipped with air conditioners and one is prepare to shoulder the high electricity cost and the maintenance cost of the cooling equipment.

In general if the weather is hot, one may switch on the air conditioner for a confined area such as a room or the living area only and stay in the air conditioned area to avoid the stifling indoor heat at other part of the house. If we were to walk out from the room, we may feel uncomfortable and the comfort zone is limited. The air conditioned area may get warm in a very short period if the air conditioner is switched off due to the constant transfer of heat from the roof and it may take a while to cool the area concerned. which incur higher energy cost.

Thus the long term solution is to provide proper and effective thermal insulaiton to your home.

The long exposure under air conditioners may be detrimental to our health due to low humidity and is bad especailly to old folks

THE FOLLOWING SIMPLE PRACTICAL EXPERIMENTS SHALL SHOW THE EFFECTS OF HEAT TRANSFER AND IF AIR CONDITIONERS WERE GOOD TO OUR HEALTH

Experiment 1

1. Lay a piece of mattress flat on your bedroom floor in the morning

2. In the afternoon between 2-3pm, touch the mattress and feel if the mattress has gained the heat

Note : You may place a thermometer on the mattress and read the difference

Q: Why does the mattress become warm despite being placed in a room with roof, ceiling and walls around?
A: Heat is gained through radiation and convection. In a double storey house, the upper floor is usually warmer as the heat is being convected through the ceiling.

In the above case, no one could sleep on the warm mattress without first cool down the room temperature and the mattress with the help of air conditioner. It may take a while despite at night to reduce the high room temperature due to the heat gained in the afternoon.

However, one can sleep comfortably on the same mattress with a low speed fan in the afternoon of a hot sunny day as though it is after a heavy downpour if the house is insulated with PC INSUL.

Experiment 2

1. Switch on the air conditioner for a bedroom measuring about 10 feet x 14 feet before sleep and connect the discharge pipe of the air conditioner to a 5 litre pail.

2. Allow your 1 hp air condiioner run for 8 hours

Q: The 5 litre pail is full of water in the next morning, where does the water come from?
A: The moisutre in the air is being absorbed and we are sleeping in low humid level room which is not healthy to our health

In the above case, if the house is insulated with PC INSUL. You may need to switch on your air conditioner for 2 hours and the room shall remain cool and comfortable for the whole night with a low speed fan simply because 90% of the heat was blocked and cool air are being retained in the room.

It takes a shorter period to cool a room which is insulated with PC INSUL as heat is 90% blocked from being transmitted to the rooms in the afternoon. Thus consumption of electricity is reduced.
